Community Learning and Parent Support Programmes

At The Little Skool-House International, we value our parents, who are our critical partners in our delivery of the best early childhood education programmes for our children.

We believe in an active tripartite collaboration between our parents, children and teachers throughout the year.

A structured community and parent involvement/support programme is in place to encourage parents to take on a more active and formalized role in their children’s learning.

Applying Epstein's Framework

The six types of involvement:

1. Parenting Helping all families establish home environments to support their children, programmes to assist families with health, nutrition and other services.
2. Communicating Regular schedule of useful notices, newsletters, phone calls and other communications.
3. Volunteering Recruit and organize parent help and support for centre activities, events, etc.
4. Learning at home Provide ideas and information to families about how to help children with their learning, and other curriculum related activities, decision and planning.
5. Decision Making Includes parents in school decisions, developing parent leaders and representatives through Parent Support Groups.
6. Collaborating with community Working collaboratively with community health, cultural, recreational, social support and other services to strengthen school programmes.

Other programmes/ workshops

Parent Education Workshops
These monthly workshops focus on:
- Providing parents with strategies to enhance their parenting effectiveness
- Achieving a greater understanding of their children’s learning
- Understanding the rationale and content of The Little Skool-House International centres’ programmes, along with its support services.

Back to School with Dad 2007
The Little Skool-House International recognizes the importance all fathers play in nurturing their children's development. In collaboration with the Centre for Fathering, we are proud to be involved in the exciting initiative, Back to School with Dad 2007.

This initiative is aimed at encouraging fathers to be actively involved in their children's overall development and to foster father-child bonding. Fathers are encouraged to take their children to and from school on a more regular basis and participate in the many activities conducted at the centre.

A Raffle Draw was also held in January where tickets priced at $2 were sold to fathers in recognition of their support for greater involvement of fathers in their children’s development. Half the proceeds from the sale of the tickets went to the Centre for Fathering.

The fathers at our three centres were very supportive of the initiative and there was a greater level of participation of fathers helping in settling in their new children, rendering assistance in helping other children settling in and participation of fathers in activities conducted at the centre especially at our first Fun Night.

To provide further support to the fathers in enhancing their parental role, Mr. Suen Wong, Director of the Centre for Fathering conducted a parenting workshop entitled, Shared Parenting in Our Fast-paced World. The talk highlighted on the importance of having fathers take on a greater role in nurturing their children and how despite the obstacles, couples can devise more equal arrangements –out of explicit principles or simply out of fairness and love.

Parent Hour@ Centers
Once a week, parents are encouraged to spend time engaged in an activity with their child. The activities could include baking, cooking, art and craft, gardening, making books together or reading to/with their child. This involvement of parents into the classroom would provide parents with a sense of confidence with the centre services, enhance their bond with their child and at the same time promote their parenting skills.

VIP: Volunteers in Partnership
The VIP exists for those parents who are able to help out with centre events and activities.

Family Fun Nights
In our efforts at building trust and including parents in the school community, we organise occasional Family Fun Nights. Activities would include: Picnic Dinner and Watch a Movie, Bingo Night, Spaghetti Supper, Grandparents’ Night, Book Sales and Multicultural celebrations .These informal evenings are not only a perfect setting for parents to get to know each other and staff, but offer opportunities for teachers to talk about how families can participate in their children’s education and development.
